FAQs – Year 4 MChem

Which set of rules will be used to classify my MChem degree?
F102/FZ61/FZBF/F1F3: The most recent version of Appendix J in the Code of Practice on Assessment (CoPA).

The pass mark for level 7 FHEQ (aka 'level M') modules is 50% (whereas it is 40% for LIFE369) – there is no "35% rule" and there are no August/September resits. Any 'level M' module mark less than 50% (or 40% for LIFE369) is a fail (regardless of how it is flagged in any of the online systems that you can access). You get no credits for any module that you fail (regardless of your marks in other modules) but that fail mark does of course still contribute to your final result. Across Years 3 and 4 you can fail a maximum of 30 credits.

What are the relative weights of the different years of study?
For F102/FZBF/F1F3, Y2:Y3:Y4 are weighted 20:40:40. For FZ61, Y2:Y3:Y4 are weighted 20:20:60.

How can I get a transcript of my marks so far?

Graduation ceremonies: Monday, 17 July 2017 to Friday, 21 July 2017. [School of Physical Sciences: Thursday, 20 July at 4.30pm]

What happens if an application for Extenuating Circumstances has been accepted?
The Extenuating Circumstances Committee will consider whether a higher degree can be recommended than is suggested by the marks achieved. Without revealing details of the Extenuating Circumstances, members of that Committee will make recommendations to the External Examiners and to the Board of Examiners as to the class of degree that should be awarded.

What if an application for Extenuating Circumstances has been accepted for modules that were taken in Year 4 but I am not happy with the class of degree that has been confirmed by the Board of Examiners?
You can choose not to graduate but instead to re-sit relevant exams with 'first attempt' status as an external repeat in January 2018 or May/June 2018, as appropriate, in an attempt to get a higher class of degree. According to CoPA such students 'MUST, within 10 days of the formal confirmation of the result by the Board of Examiners, give notice in writing to the Director of Student Administration and Support (SAS) division, of their decision to re-sit/re-take'. Note that any 'student whose degree has already been conferred, either in person or in absentia, may not return to the University to re-sit/re-take their final year.' The 10-day deadline is likely to expire at 4pm on Thursday 13th July 2017.

Have I 'lost' the opportunity to graduate with a BSc if I fail to get the MChem degree?
From CoPA: 'If students have failed modules worth more than 30 credits ... they will not be eligible for the award of a Master’s degree, but may be eligible for the award of a Bachelor's degree.' [All of you WOULD be eligible if you could have graduated at the end of Year 3.]

If I fail too many credits, can I resit some Year 4 exams as an external repeat in January 2018 or May/June 2018, as appropriate?
From CoPA: “Students with insufficient credits for an Integrated Master’s degree at the end of Year 4 shall have the opportunity to be re-assessed in failed fourth year modules at the next scheduled sitting. The mark obtained at the second attempt will be capped at the pass mark for the purposes of determining the final degree, except where the second attempt is allowed under mitigating circumstances.” [This applies only to modules taken in Year 4 and not to any fails brought forward from Year 3.] As for the case mentioned above, you would need to give notice in writing to the Director of SAS.
