What happens if an application for Mitigating Circumstances has been accepted?
The Mitigating Circumstances Committee will consider whether a higher degree can be recommended than is suggested by the marks achieved. Without revealing details of the Mitigating Circumstances, members of that Committee will make recommendations to the External Examiners and to the Board of Examiners as to the class of degree that should be awarded.
What if an application for Mitigating Circumstances has been accepted for modules that were taken in Year 4 but I am not happy with the class of degree that has been confirmed by the Board of Examiners?
You can choose not to graduate but instead to re-sit relevant exams with 'first attempt' status as an external repeat in January 2015 or May 2015, as appropriate, in an attempt to get a higher class of degree. According to CoPA such students “MUST, within 10 days of the formal confirmation of the result by the Board of Examiners, give notice in writing to the Director of Student Administration and Support (SAS) division, of their decision to re-sit/re-take”. Note that any “student whose degree has already been conferred, either in person or in absentia, may not return to the University to re-sit/re-take their final year.”
Have I ‘lost’ the opportunity to graduate with a BSc if I fail to get the MChem degree?
From CoPA: “If students have failed modules worth more than 30 credits ... they will not be eligible for the award of a Master’s degree, but may be eligible for the award of a Bachelor’s degree.” [All of you WOULD be eligible if you could have graduated at the end of Year 3.]
If I fail too many credits, can I resit some Year 4 exams as an external repeat in January 2015 or May 2015, as appropriate?
From CoPA: “Students with insufficient credits for an Integrated Master’s degree at the end of Year 4 shall have the opportunity to be re-assessed in failed fourth year modules at the next scheduled sitting. The mark obtained at the second attempt will be capped at the pass mark for the purposes of determining the final degree, except where the second attempt is allowed under mitigating circumstances.” [This applies only to modules taken in Year 4 and not to any fails brought forward from Year 3.] As for the case mentioned above, you would need to give notice in writing to the Director of SAS.
