FAQs – Year 3 MChem at UoL

Which set of rules will be used to determine whether I can progress into Year 4?
F102/FZBF/F1F3: The most recent version of Appendix J in the Code of Practice on Assessment (CoPA).

Amongst other requirements, you must pass at least 90 credits and achieve an overall average of at least 55%. The pass mark for most of your modules this year is 40% – there is no "35% rule" and there are no August/September resits. Any module mark less than 40% is a fail (regardless of how it is flagged in any of the online systems that you can access). For the level 7 FHEQ (aka 'level M') module CHEM452 the pass mark is instead 50%. You get no credits for any module that you fail (regardless of your marks in other modules) but that fail mark does of course still contribute to your Year 3 average.

What are the relative weights of the different years of study?
For F102/FZBF/F1F3, Y2:Y3:Y4 are weighted 20:40:40. For FZ61, Y2:Y3:Y4 are weighted 20:20:60.

How can I get a transcript of my marks so far?

Will I have the option not to progress into Year 4?
Yes, as long as you need to tell us about such a decision in sufficient time before the Final Board of Examiners meeting.
[You should be aware of the following unambiguous clause from CoPA: “If a student opts to exit at the end of Year 3 once the final Board of Examiners meeting has been held, they will be considered for the award at the final Board of Examiners meeting in the following year.” In practice, this means a delay of up to 12 months before you can graduate with a BSc.]

If I progress into Year 4 but have failed up to 30 credits in Year 3, can I ever re-sit those failed modules?
Yes, as specified in CoPA: 'Students who meet the requirements for progression from year 3 to year 4 will be given the opportunity to be re-assessed in failed Year 3 modules once, during, but not beyond, Year 4, at the next sitting.' In practice, that means re-taking failed exams in January 2018 or May/June 2018, as appropriate, as if you were an external repeat candidate. Notice that this is an 'opportunity' – you are not required to re-take those exams. The overall module mark for re-sits is of course capped at the relevant pass mark unless an application for Extenuating Circumstances has been accepted.

What happens if I do not meet the requirements to progress into Year 4?
You will be considered instead for the award of a BSc(Hons) degree.

If I fail too many credits to get a BSc(Hons) degree, can I resit some Final Year exams as an external repeat in January 2018 or May/June 2018, as appropriate?
Yes, as specified in CoPA. Note that such students 'MUST, within 10 days of the formal confirmation of the result by the Board of Examiners, give notice in writing to the Director of Student Administration and Support (SAS) division, of their decision to re-sit/re-take.' In the absence of Extenuating Circumstances, re-sit marks will be capped at the pass mark. The 10-day deadline is likely to expire at 4pm on Thursday 13th July 2017.

What happens if an application for Extenuating Circumstances has been accepted?
The Extenuating Circumstances Committee will consider whether a higher degree can be recommended than is suggested by the marks achieved. Without revealing details of the Extenuating Circumstances, members of that Committee will make recommendations to the External Examiners and to the Board of Examiners as to the class of degree that should be awarded.

What if an application for Extenuating Circumstances has been accepted for modules that were taken in my Final Year but I am not happy with the class of degree that has been confirmed by the Board of Examiners?
You can choose not to graduate but instead to re-sit relevant exams with 'first attempt' status as an external repeat in January 2018 or May/June 2018, as appropriate, in an attempt to get a higher class of degree. According to CoPA such students 'MUST, within 10 days of the formal confirmation of the result by the Board of Examiners, give notice in writing to the Director of Student Administration and Support (SAS) division, of their decision to re-sit/re-take'. Note that any 'student whose degree has already been conferred, either in person or in absentia, may not return to the University to re-sit/re-take their final year.' The 10-day deadline is likely to expire at 4 pm on Thursday 13th July 2017.
